P V Sindhus coach Pullela Gopichand has lauded her for a gritty performance after she clinched?the China Open on Sunday. Gopi, who didnt travel with the Olympic silver medallist, said he was impressed with the character Sindhu showed to overcome tricky situations over the course of the tournament.Three of Sindhus five matches over the week extended to three games, including the final against local player Sun Yu and despite being on court for nearly five hours, Gopi was pleased to see her maintain her intensity and not wilt under pressure.I think her play has been fantastic all week, Gopichand told ESPN. She has fought hard, she has played with a lot of character, and showed us some good back court strokes, good movement and fitness. Shes somebody with a good work ethic and a strong physique. I have always thought of her to be one of the fitter players and this performance just enforces that viewpoint. Although we have had a lot of felicitations happening, we have managed a decent amount of training in the last few weeks which is very creditable, not just by Sindhu but also her parents.Sindhus best effort at a Super Series event was previously?at the Denmark Open in 2015, where she had reached the final.Although her glittering CV included two World Championship bronze medals besides the silver from Rio, a Super Series title -- the elite tournaments in the sport -- had remained elusive.Gopi admits that while he wasnt losing any sleep over it, the win in China may have taken a burden off her shoulders because the missing Super Series title may have been playing on Sindhus mind. His focus as a coach, however, remains on more long-term goals such as continuing to develop her game so she can be counted among the top players on the international circuit. To be at the top of any world sport, you have to adapt, he says. It is about how well you counter your opponents and how well you are converting your losses into victories over a period of time. People will mark you and figure you out and you need to do the same to your opponents. It is an ongoing struggle. She has proved that she can play well in various venues and it is good to see her progress. Sindhu played a good level in Rio and she has played one more level here. I expect that there is another step to go and feel that she can improve further.Despite having pocketed the title in China, Sindhu may not make the cut for the year end Super Series Finals in Dubai in December, contested between the top eight players on the circuit. Having missed a few Super Series events at the start of the year as she was recovering from injury, Sindhu might not be able to accumulate enough points to qualify for the prestigious event. Gopi is unperturbed by the prospect insisting he isnt even thinking about it.Sindhu now travels to Hong Kong for another Super Series event next week where she isnt among the top eight seeds. Isa Nacewa rescued a late losing bonus point for Leinster which kept them top of Champions Cup Pool Four following a 22-16 defeat to Montpellier at the Altrad Stradium.Nacewa converted his own 79th-minute try to leave Leo Cullens men a point clear of Castres and Montpellier in the table, ahead of their December double-header against Northampton.Leinster are now winless in their last six European trips, with Sundays result leaving the four teams in the pool with one victory each after the opening two rounds.Poor handling conditions made for a tight first half until well-taken tries from Vincent Martin (28) and Nemani Nadolo (34) saw Montpellier march into a 14-3 half-time lead.Leinsters defence let them down for those converted scores and Jamie Heaslips 58th-minute blunder, handing man of the match Nadolo an easy finish for his second try while Rob Kearney was in the sin-bin.However, Garry Ringrose and Heaslip came to the fore as Montpelliers big forwards began to tire, and captain Nacewa raided in from the left touchline for what could prove to be a priceless seven-pointer.The Irish province wore red T-shirts with the initials AF and the number eight for the minutes applause in memory of late Munster head coach Anthony Foley. They stayed solid through three early scrums, while Zane Kirchner and Heaslip were both prominent in defence. There were turnovers aplenty on the damp, muddy pitch, with Montpellier - narrow losers in Northampton last week - unable to convert their territorial advantage into points. The hosts robust maul drew the first shot at goal in the 20th minute but South African Frans Steyn struck the left post from the 10-metre line, and a right-sided kick from Nacewa nudged Leinster ahead five minutes later. However, Montpellier rreplied with a try out of nothing on the half-hour, Cian Healy knocking on in contact and centre Martin running hard against forwards to slice straight through from 40 metres out.ddddddddddddSteyn converted from the right for 7-3.Buoyed by that score, the French side used good width from a lineout to tee up giant Fijian winger Nadolo and he bumped off Rob Kearney to dive over in the left corner, with Steyn adding a textbook touchline conversion. With Jonathan Sextons tight hamstring forcing him off, Joey Carbery started the second half but there was little the 20-year-old fly-half could do as Montpellier made headway in the maul and scrum.Steyn turned a scrum penalty into three points before Nacewa punished an offside from Shalva Mamukashvili to make it 17-6, rewarding some decent attacking play from Leinster.Referee Luke Pearce then ruled that Kearneys challenge on Joffrey Michel was late as the Montpellier full-back chased his own kick.Kearney appeared to stand his ground but Pearces review with TMO Geoff Warren led to a yellow card.It went from bad to worse for Leinster as, just two minutes later, Heaslips pass off the side of a scrum close to his own try-line was intercepted by Nadolo for a gift-wrapped five-pointer.But Leinster dug deep to rack up 10 crucial points during the closing 18 minutes, their bench proving a timely spark along with Ringroses midfield runs.Nacewa notched his third successful penalty and, after replacements Dan Leavy and Jamison Gibson-Park were both stopped short of the line in the same attack, the visitors reloaded and Gibson-Parks bullet pass put Nacewa over with just seconds left.
