The father of Olympic walking bronze medallist Dane Bird-Smith has been fined about $3,000 over his run-in with Rio police, in an incident his son brushed off as classic dad behaviour.Two-time Olympian David Smith has coached his 24-year-old son in a sporting career that climaxed when he finished third in the 20km race on Friday (Saturday AEST).Smith was positioned at the track-side drinks station throughout the race where he was able to provide loud and regular encouragement.But he fell foul of local security officials, who prevented him from entering the official post-race area to celebrate with his son and then escorted him away.Australian team officials confirmed that Smith had been charged over the incident, which included an allegation he threw a bag at police when he was refused entry.He was provided with legal assistance and fined 7,500 reais.Mr Smith left the Olympic Village this morning, as planned, an Australian team spokesman said.He was accredited as his sons coach and was due to leave today after his sons event was over.Smith joked on Friday he had about 400 messages on his phone, many from friends cheekily offering to bail him out.They took my accreditation because they wanted to check it and I think the chief supervisor locked it in his office and went home before the end of the race, he told AAP.Bird-Smith said he was thrilled to have done his dad proud in the race, where he clocked a personal best of one hour 19 minutes and 37 seconds to finish third behind Chinese duo Wang Zhen and Cai Zelin.Weve been working together as a team basically since I started race-walking, he said.
