GREEN BAY, Wisc. -- Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers has been either a head coach or defensive coordinator in the NFL for 23 seasons. He doesnt need any of that experience to figure out the Chicago Bears game plan for Thursday night. The Packers probably will be without their three top cornerbacks. That unit will be under siege from Brian Hoyer, who is the first quarterback in Bears history to have four consecutive 300-yard passing games. When you look at the Bears statistics, I would anticipate theyll throw the ball because thats what theyve been having a lot of success doing, Capers said.On the other side of the coin, the Packers have had shockingly little success throwing the football. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers funk continued in last weeks 30-16 loss to Dallas. While the numbers looked nice at the end of the game -- 31-of-42 passing for 294 yards and a 90.8 passer rating, Rodgers turned over the ball twice and the Packers scored one touchdown in four trips in the red zone. After the game, Rodgers said he would go home and watch the game over a glass of scotch. The scotch was great, Rodgers said. You know, I saw things that weve been seeing throughout the year. Were close. Weve been making some plays at times, but not good enough consistently. Weve got to clean some things up, Ive got to make some better throws at times and weve got to get on the same page a little bit more consistently, especially in the red zone. The last two weeks weve really struggled down there, turning the ball over a few times, I have, so youve got to clean that stuff up. You cant take points off the board like that. The numbers are startling. Rodgers, who owns the NFLs best career passer rating and ranks among the all-time best in completion percentage and yards per attempt, ranks 20th, 26th and 26th, respectively, in those categories.Rodgers, however, remains undaunted that he -- and the offense -- will get back on track. Its football, he said. Theres going to be stretches where youre playing really great and stretches where youre just a little bit off, and weve just been a little bit off I think collectively. Im confident. Were five games into it. Were going to get it fixed pretty soon.As for Hoyer, hell be attacking a no-name group of cornerbacks. The Packers placed their top player, veteran Sam Shields, on injured reserve due to a concussion sustained on Sept. 11 at Jacksonville. The other starters, second-year players Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins, probably wont play because of groin injuries. That will leave Green Bay with some combination of Micah Hyde, the teams No. 3 safety, LaDarius Gunter, an undrafted free agent in 2015, Demetri Goodson, a sixth-round pick in 2014 who returned from a four-game suspension last week, and Josh Hawkins, an undrafted free agent in 2016, trying to stop the prolific receiver trio of Alshon Jeffery (29 receptions, 487 yards), Eddie Royal (29 receptions, 338 yards) and Cameron Meredith (26 receptions, 295 yards). Even without Dez Bryant, Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott lit up the Packers for 247 yards, three touchdowns and a 117.4 passer rating last week.Especially on a short week and with everything that they do schematically, we have our work cut out for us over the next 48 hours just trying to see what theyve done, see whos playing, Hoyer said. The one constant is obviously that front seven is really good. We have to handle those guys and then react to how theyre going to play us on the best end.Chicagos offensive stats are hard to fathom. The Bears are seventh in total offense, including fourth in passing offense, but theyre just 31st in scoring with 16.8 points per game. Theyve topped 20 points only once in six games.Obviously, these games are won by who has the most points, Bears coach John Fox said. Weve come up a little short in that area.Injuries havent just wiped out Green Bays cornerback depth. Theyve left a mess of the running back depth chart, too. Starter Eddie Lacy played through a sprained ankle last week and was very sore on Tuesday, according to coach Mike McCarthy. His backup, James Starks, had knee surgery on Sunday. As a response, Green Bay acquired Knile Davis from the Chiefs in a trade on Tuesday. The other option is Don Jackson, an undrafted rookie whos on the practice squad.Chicago, on the other hand, has gotten production from rookie Jordan Howard, who has 330 yards and a 5.0-yard average. TORONTO -- Corey Klubers first career start on short rest hardly went the way he wanted.Looking to finish off a Cleveland sweep in the AL Championship Series, the ace right-hander got touched up by the Toronto Blue Jays during a 5-1 defeat Tuesday in Game 4.Kluber was pushed up to pitch on three days rest because of several injuries to Clevelands rotation. He took the loss after allowing two runs and four hits while throwing 89 pitches in five innings.I felt fine, Kluber said. I dont think (the short rest) physically affected me.It was the first time the 2014 AL Cy Young Award winner permitted a playoff opponent to score. He had thrown 13 1/3 scoreless innings against the Red Sox and Blue Jays this October, his first postseason. We talked to Kluber after every inning and I thought he held his stuff really good, Indians manager Terry Francona said. I thought his legs started to get a little tired.Following their first loss in seven playoff games this year, the Indians remain one win from their first trip to the World Series since 1997. Theyll take a 3-1 ALCS lead into Game 5 on Wednesday, when rookie left-hander Ryan Merritt starts against Blue Jays righty Marco Estrada.Merritts major league resume consists of 11 regular-season innings this year. He made one start, holding Kansas City to a run and three hits in five innings on Sept. 30.If you told me on the first day of the season I would be pitching in the ALCS, I might have thought you were crazy, Merritt said. Clinching this win would be awesome. To get this opportunity is awesome. It feels good that the team trusts me.Francona is optimistic Merritt will be up to the task.I think hes OK, the manager said. He talked to (pitching coach Mickey Callaway) a little bit about the scouting report this morning.Cleveland has been without starters Carlos Carrasco (broken handd) and Danny Salazar (forearm) this entire postseason.dddddddddddd Right-hander Trevor Bauer left Game 3 after four batters when blood began dripping from his right pinkie, sliced open last week as the pitcher was repairing one of the drones he enjoys flying as a hobby. The early exit by Bauer forced the Indians to get 25 outs from their stellar bullpen Monday night and prompted Francona to turn to Kluber on short rest in Game 4.If the ALCS goes the distance, Kluber could wind up starting on three days rest again. Game 7 would be Saturday in Cleveland. Were one win away from the World Series and thats what were focused on, Kluber said.Kluber, who went 6 1/3 innings to win Game 1, pitched around singles in the first two innings Tuesday before giving up a two-out solo homer to reigning AL MVP Josh Donaldson in the third. It marked the first time Cleveland trailed in the series.I made a mistake to Donaldson, Kluber said. There was more trouble for Kluber in the fourth, which began with back-to-back walks to Troy Tulowitzki and Russell Martin. It was the third time this season Kluber issued consecutive walks, and the first time hed done so against the first two batters in an inning. After Michael Saunders struck out swinging, Ezequiel Carrera made it 2-0 with a bloop single that dropped in front of center fielder Tyler Naquin. Kluber responded by striking out Kevin Pillar and Ryan Goins.Kluber retired his final five batters, striking out three. He walked two and fanned seven, matching his strikeout total from Game 2 of the Division Series against Boston.I thought we did a good job of battling, Martin said. Hes definitely a tough guy to score runs against, but we found a way to get a couple today. ' ' '
