Melbournes Lynden Dunn admits he is frustrated at plying his trade in the VFL but says the lure of an elusive maiden finals campaign has him motivated for the future. The 29-year-old has long been a mainstay in the Melbourne backline but a combination of injury, poor form and the clubs emerging key defenders means Dunn has only played four senior games in 2016.The last of them was against St Kilda in Round 6, when Melbourne copped a 39-point reality check as Nick Riewoldt and Tim Membrey ran riot.Dunn told ESPN he deserved to be demoted after the Saints game, but the 165-game veteran said he knew what he needed to do to break back into the senior side.It [my season] has been frustrating - it certainly hasnt gone how Id planned it, he said.Being injured in pre-season, coming into the team to play a handful of games and then being dropped after the St Kilda game - which was fair enough - going back to the VFL and then injuring my hamstring four weeks ago. Its not ideal. Throw in a few [VFL] byes and Ive only played two games in the past two months. Its been very frustrating. But I just need to force my way back in. I had a meeting with Roosy [coach Paul Roos] last week, [and I] have to build a consistent block of benchmark performances.Weve got some really good young key defenders in the seniors at the moment - Tom McDonald has been holding the fort, with [McDonalds younger brother] Oscar and Sam Frost, who have been developing really well, so its hard not to play them if theyre doing a good job, and I love seeing them play well. After making his name as a rugged man-on-man defender, Dunn said he had also struggled to adapt to the Demons new zone defence. It certainly is a lot different; I think the media has put their own spin on our zone defence, but its definitely different than we have had in the past, he said.Having played a certain way your whole career, its difficult at times getting your head around it and the way the game is heading, but thats just modern footy. But I feel Ive made some real inroads this year with the game style, and Ive dropped a few kilos, Im moving better, but I just have to string some quality games together and force my way back in.Dunn arrived at Melbourne as the 15th pick in the 2004 national draft. Since then the Demons have endured a decade of turmoil, tragedy and shocking on-field results.Dunn steps into womens footy roleBut the club finally appears to be on the right track this season, playing an attacking brand of football and unearthing several talented youngsters to sit 10th on the ladder with a 7-8 record.Dunn, whose contract runs until the end of 2017, said he was determined to play on at the Demons and was motivated by the thought of finally breaking his AFL finals duck.[I am] contracted for next year and I plan to fulfil that at the Dees, he said.I think I have my best footy ahead of me - Ive got no doubt Ive got a new contract left in me and I feel like Ive got plenty to offer at AFL level. Its my 12th season at the Dees and weve hit rock bottom more than once, [but] seeing the group now, not just the players but the footy department, the whole club itself and our supporters, its so exciting.Finals is basically why I play footy; I want to play finals at Melbourne - we havent played finals since 2006 and Ive never played in an AFL final so thats a huge motivation for me. Were playing some really good footy at times this year but we need to string together consistent quality performances and learn to string wins together.Spud Webb Jersey . "Given the way the meeting transpired," Ray Halbritter, an Oneida representative and leader of the "Change the Mascot Campaign," said Wednesday, "it became somewhat evident they were defending the continued use of the name.EUGENE, Ore. -- At about the same time newly minted members of the U.S. Olympic track team get their uniforms, theyll be led to a TV monitor featuring a map of Rio de Janeiro with three dots: the athletes village, the track teams training center and Olympic Stadium.None of them are all that close to one another; all will take a long time to reach.USA Track and Field CEO Max Siegel said Tuesday that after a few visits to Brazil, we realized logistics would be a problem. So, in addition to counting on the Olympic traffic lanes that will supposedly make travel easier for the 120-plus U.S. track and field Olympians, USATF staff is making it clear to the athletes that they need to build in plenty of time to make their way through the city. Its expected to be a 45-to-60-minute drive from the athletes village to both the stadium and the training center. Its getting coaches and athletes to understand that its not going to be easy, like London, where everything is easy and right there, said Robert Chapman, USATFs associate director for sport science and medicine.Siegel said USATF is working with the U.S. Olympic Committee on contingency plans in case traffic does end up as snarled as some predict. Aretha Thurmond, a four-time Olympian who is now director of international teams for USATF, said staff will be on the ground a full two weeks before the Olympic track meet starts to make test runs to the stadium and map out every possible option for athletes.Theres only so much thats in your control, Thurmond said. Youve got a city with a mountain in the middle, and youve got to go around it.The process of getting from Point A to Point B may seem like a rather low-level concern considering all the other troubles consuming the Olympic city: Zika, polluted water, security concerns amid a financial crisis and more. But, as Thurmond knows, athletes need a comfort level as they head for the biggest competition of their lives. If we know somethings not right, then we try to build that into their travel schedule, she said, so athletes dont have to make that decision.Regarding the mosquito-borne virus that has hit Brazil as hard as any country, Siegel said USATF has taken part in USOC-led seminars and is distributing as much information as possible about health concerns.Among the many leaflets the athletes picck up at team processing in Eugene is one distributed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention called Mosquito Bite Prevention For Travelers.dddddddddddd The USOC will give athletes bug repellant when they go through Team USA processing in Houston later this month. But traffic, in Siegels view, is frankly, one of our biggest concerns over things we dont have immediate control over.Siegel spoke on an off day at the U.S. Track and Field Trials, and outlined his vision over the four-plus years since he took over at what is widely viewed as the countrys most difficult-to-manage national governing body.Siegel said USATF ran on an average of $18 million a year when he arrived. Thanks to new sponsorship deals, including 12 new marketing partners, the number has doubled. That has allowed USATF to give $10,000 stipends to athletes who make the national team along with bonuses of up to $25,000 for gold medals at the Olympics. It hardly quiets the federations critics, who believe they should have more freedom to wear whatever gear they choose at the sports biggest events and want to see more revenue sharing beyond the stipends and rewards for medals. One of the most vocal critics, 800-meter runner Nick Symmonds, recently filed a sponsorship-related lawsuit against the USOC that was thrown out. He has been urging athletes and fans to wear black tape at trials as a show of solidarity against the governing bodies. If we cant change things through litigation, then we have to go through protest, and athletes have to stand up and say: `Enough is enough. This will change or were not going to race anymore, Symmonds told The Associated Press last week.Siegel said hes trying to create a bigger pie, but also gave a nod to the reality that USATF, unlike the NFL or NBA, is a not-for-profit organization that serves not only its professional athletes, but also its grassroots members and programs. The conversation gets a little cloudy when people have whatever their personal definition is about sharing money with athletes, he said. If you host an event that gives an athlete a platform, some would say thats not money in the athletes pocket. But someone needs to fund those things. ' ' '
