LEDUC, Alta. - These are heady times for Taylor Hall and the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers (4-4-1) have won four straight games against Eastern Conference teams. But now comes an all too familiar challenge for Edmonton: trying to match up against their Western rivals. Edmonton began the season 0-4-1 against Western teams before getting back on track against Eastern squads at Rexall Place. But the final two contests of the Oilers seven-game homestand will be against the Nashville Predators on Wednesday night and Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night. We certainly get excited about playing Eastern Conference teams, Hall said after practice Tuesday. Its pretty obvious the Eastern style lends itself to the way our team is built a little bit more than the West. But in saying that, I think the way our team is built this year is more capable of playing Western teams. It might not have shown in the first five games but I think as the season goes on you will see that. Head coach Dallas Eakins feels a reason for Edmontons success against Eastern teams, simply put, is confidence. It seems like weve got a little extra mojo and a little extra swagger when were playing an Eastern team, he said. Against the Western teams I feel were a little more tense and we have to get over that. Listen, Montreal is as good as L.A., theyre as good as Anaheim ... we should be able to play with every team in this league now. Veteran defenceman Andrew Ference, who joined the Oilers two years ago after seven years in Boston, credits the four wins to the Oilers playing more responsibly in the defensive zone. Youve seen a lot better job of five guys working together to prevent chances, he said. The other parts of our game were going all right. The more glaring thing for me was the breakdowns that we have definitely limited, if not eliminated, on many nights. Edmontons 3-0 win over Montreal on Monday improved its record to 4-1 on the homestand. This time last year, the Oilers were 3-9-1 and en route to finishing with a 29-44-9 mark. Last year, Edmonton was 14-14-4 against the Eastern Conference but just 15-30-5 versus Western rivals. Despite its early-season struggles, Hall said the Oilers seemed to adopt a new mindset following a 2-0 home loss to Vancouver on Oct. 17. It seems like we have a different mentality on the bench, the bench doesnt seem to get as down, he said. I dont know if its maturity or what it is, but we dont have that quiet on the bench when something bad happens. Meanwhile, Eakins confirmed centre Leon Draisaitl, Edmontons first-round pick in Junes NHL draft, will remain with the club. Wednesday nights contest will be Draisaitls 10th and activate the first year of his entry-level contract. You shouldnt be surprised, said Eakins. Hes part of our hockey team. Hes earned the right to be here in the lineup (Wednesday). He continues to improve. His perseverance and commitment right now is outstanding. Draisaitl, a native of Cologne, Germany, turned 19 on Monday. He took the good news in stride. Im just trying to get better every day, he said. Just get up in the morning and get better every day. You couldnt say I was confident I would stick around but I think for the most part of the nine games, I think I did a pretty good job. The 24-year-old right winger has one assist in nine games this season with the Sabres. In his career, he has three goals and six assists in 43 NHL games.ORLANDO, Fla. -- South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaws career has been marked by a mix of special moments and others hed like to forget. He made sure his final game was one hell be able to savour. Shaw was responsible for five touchdowns, including three passing, and No. 8 South Carolina outlasted No. 19 Wisconsin 34-24 in the Capital One Bowl on Wednesday. The Gamecocks senior was named the games MVP after picking apart the Badgers defence, completing 22 of 25 passes for 312 yards. Shaw also had scores rushing and receiving. South Carolina (11-2) won its third straight bowl game to cap its third straight 11-win season. After untimely injuries and losses culminated in the Gamecocks missing a spot in the BCS, Shaw said this performance offered some redemption. "I told the team before the game that weve faced every possible scenario we could possible face this season and that Wisconsin would be no different," Shaw said. "Im so glad the way we battled throughout the game and our defence came and played. "I couldnt be more proud." The game also turned out to be the final college contest for Jadeveon Clowney, who said afterward that he would forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft. "Before we even put the pads on, I thought weve only got 60 minutes and its over with. Im going to be sad about it. ... Im excited to move forward with my life though." Bruce Ellington caught six passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Shaw Roland also hauled in six catches for 112 yards. "The guys, we came together as a team today and Connor did a great job of leading us," Ellington said. "We just came out and played." Shaws receivers caught balls in traffic and in the open field, gashing a Wisconsin defence that surrendered 438 yards for the game. The Badgers also allowed two fourth-down conversions, one which set up a 22-yard touchdown pass from Shaw to Ellington that put the Gamecocks up for good late in the third quarter. Wisconsin (9-4) lost its fourth straight bowl game, failing to capitalize on 100-yard rushing games from both Melvin Gordon and James White, and struggling after quarterback Joel Stave left in the third quarter with a shoulder injury. Backup Curt Phillips was intercepted twice. While the Gamecocks couldnt contain the Badgers rushing attack for most of the game, Shaw and his receivers did plenty to keep South Carolina productive on offence. Trailing 17-13 in the third quarter, Ellington reeled in a juggling receptiion near the sideline on a fourth-and-7 play.dddddddddddd Two plays later Shaw found Ellington for the 22-yard touchdown strike to put the Gamecocks up by three. The Badgers lost Stave on the next series, and with Phillips taking over were stopped short on a fourth-down run inside the Gamecocks 30. South Carolina took advantage, and needed just six plays for Shaw to find Jerrell Adams for a 3-yard touchdown that made it 27-17 with 11:05 to play in the game. "You kind of walk a fine line between being aggressive, getting after the quarterback and containing him," Badgers coach Gary Andersen said. "Our plan was to be aggressive. At times we didnt get the pressure we should have and at times he was able to extend plays." Wisconsin wasnt done. Kenzel Doe took the ensuing kickoff and ran it back 91 yards for a score to get the Badgers back within a field goal. But Shaw went back to work. Pinned inside his own 15 to start the drive, he used a combination of runs and passes to set up his 1-yard touchdown plunge to cap a nine-play, 81-yard drive that made it 34-24. Wisconsin appeared to be done after Phillips was intercepted by Kaiwan Lewis with less than five minutes to play, but the Gamecocks gave it right back on Brandon Wilds fumble on the next series. The Badgers picked up a few first downs, but then Phillips was intercepted again by Skai Moore with 3:14 left to end the threat. "We were very good defensively in the fourth quarter. It was a fourth-quarter game," South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said. Clowney had four tackles in the first half, including one for a loss. But he was mostly a non-factor early as the Badgers alternated White and Gordon in the backfield. Wisconsin rushed for 293 yards in the game, but had no rushing touchdowns. The badgers hadnt lost by double digits since October 2010 (also 34-24 to Michigan State). Since then, theyd lost 13 times, all by seven points or less. Gamecocks defensive end Victor Hampton, whose hit knocked Stave out of the game, confirmed afterward that he would skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft. He said he thought South Carolinas defence displayed its true personality when it had to. "That was a knock-down, drag out fight," Hampton said. "Everybody was saying we couldnt stop the run, but we showed them different. They got some yards on us in the first half and (Melvin Gordon) was really impressive, but in the second half, it was all over. We shut them down." ' ' '
