AMSTERDAM -- Kenyan-born teenager Yasemin Can clinched a long-distance double for Turkey at the European Championships on Saturday, dominating the 5,000 meters with spectacular running from the front, much as she had done during the 10,000 three days earlier. Can, 19, was only cleared to run for Turkey in March and made the most of this with a devastating kick after two kilometers -- and never letting up -- to win in a slow 15 minutes, 18.15 seconds, beating defending champion Meraf Bahta of Sweden by 2.39 seconds. She had won the 10,000 in much the same style. Can qualified for both Olympic events but said the daring front-running tactics would change when she faced the best in the world, mostly from her continent of birth.I am not going to run alone there. I will follow someone, Can said.It was the fourth gold for Turkey at the championships, and all won by athletes who were foreign-born. With Russia not competing because of a doping ban, the medal table was bound to look different. But few would have expected Turkey to do this well, especially after finishing the Euros two years ago with a single bronze. In the pole vault, Greeces Ekaterini Stefanidi wiped the championship record of Yelena Isinbayeva off the books by 1 centimeter, clearing 4.81 meters when gold was already assured. The Russian is still trying to make it to the Rio games under a special exemption.Anouk Vetter gave the Netherlands a third gold medal at the championships with victory in the heptathlon.Vetter dominated the two-day, seven-event competition and won with a national record of 6,626 points, breaking the old mark of heptathlete turned sprinter Dafne Schippers. Antoinette Nana Djimou of France was second. The Dutch 4x100 relay squad kept 100 champion Schippers in the hunt for a second gold when it qualified for Sundays final. Schippers skipped the first round of the relays because of a tight hamstring and is still unsure to run Sundays final. Schippers is a favorite for Olympic gold in the 200 and also stands a good chance in the 100 next month and does not want to endanger her fitness now.Can was not the only 19-year-old to win Saturday. German Max Hess did likewise in the triple jump with a Europe-leading effort of 17.20 meters. Hess already proved his credentials when he took silver at the world indoors in March. In the biggest upset of the evening, double Olympic javelin champion Barbora Spotakova failed to successfully defend her European title and finished fifth, well behind winner Tatsiana Khaladovich, who won with a Belarussian record of 66.34 meters.Laurent Koscielny Arsenal Jersey . And it looks like this year theyre going to produce another bumper crop.[To have six forwards drafted] is an amazing achievement, if it does happen. Each of the sextet brings different attributes to the table.Marshall -- a former cricket prodigy who only decided to pursue a football career ahead of the 2016 season - is an athletic, 198cm tall forward likely to feature in the first round of the draft.Simpkin, a silky-skilled medium forward, is also a likely first-rounder despite missing nearly the entire season due to a horror broken leg.Sproule, a mobile key position player, is a GWS Academy prospect who can play at both ends of the ground.Tiziani, also linked to the GWS Academy, is a dynamic medium forward who shone through the second half of the season.Ratugolea is a powerfully built ruck/forward while McMullan is a former junior Australian basketballer who can also play as a key forward or ruckman. The maan charged with overseeing such talent, Leon Higgins, said he knew he had an embarrassment of riches on his hands entering his first year as coach of the Bushrangers.ddddddddddddHiggins, the former Sydney and Hawthorn midfielder, said he soon knew it was going to be difficult to fit all his options into the one part of the ground; indeed he was forced to play some of them in different positions for the betterment of the team, and the individuals. We did go into a lot of games with a tall forward line - that was part of the reason we moved Zac back. It was a good problem to have though, Higgins told ESPN.Its pretty exciting. I think we may have an even better year than 2008 [when star Bushrangers Jack Ziebell,?Steele Sidebottom,?Sam Wright and Tom Rockliff were drafted] - weve got eight to 10 draftable players in my opinion. But being the draft, you never know.ESPN AFL draft expert Christoper Doerre - aka Knightmare - on...Todd Marshall: A tall, athletic key forward with rare agility and ground-level ability. Lack of any dominant performances and lack of presence up forward has left club recruiters wondering.?Should still be drafted late in the first round. Jy Simpkin: He missed the season with injury but is one of this drafts precision kicks. Has pace and impacts scoreboard heavily off half-forward. Needs to prove he can make the jump from forward to midfielder but should be drafted in the first round.? Zachary Sproule: A mobile key position player with good running ability who spent periods forward but played much of the season down back due to Murrays glut of tall forwards. Lightly framed and lacks aggressiveness or hunger for the contest, but is still a chance in the second or third round.? Esava Ratugolea: Hes a powerfully built, athletic specimen who attacks every contest with enthusiasm and desire. Kicking and hands overhead need improvement.?A good chance to be drafted late or rookied. Lachlan Tiziani: Top-age medium forward who after switching forward from mid-June, became the TAC Cups premier goal kicker, booting 32 goals in his last nine games. Has a mix of ground level and marking ability, making him dangerous. Can improve endurance and forward pressure but is still a late draft or rookie chance. Trent McMullan: Former Australian junior basketballer who quit that sport for AFL. Top ager who finished the TAC Cup season strongly. High leaping forward who is strong overhead and a nice height.?Didnt receive a state or national combine invite, so might not be in the draft mix. ' ' '
