PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks rallied after a shaky start. They couldnt finish it off, unable to add on runs or stop one of baseballs best hitters when they needed to. Cahill laboured in his second start since returning to the rotation and Miguel Cabrera hit a hope-ending three-run homer in the eighth inning, sending the Diamondbacks to an 11-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. "We have been great about that, no question about it," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said of coming back. "They felt us coming and we had a good attitude and put up some good at-bats." Detroit had more productive ones. Austin Jackson had the first one, a three-run double in the fourth inning as the Tigers roughed up Cahill (1-7) for seven runs in four innings. Arizona clawed its way back against Anibal Sanchez (7-4), though, scoring three runs off him in the fifth and two more over the next two innings. With Tigers clinging to a two-run lead with two on and no outs in the seventh inning, Joba Chamberlain replaced Sanchez and needed one pitch to escape a jam he created by Sanchez. That set the stage for Cabrera in the eighth and the Triple Crown winner came through, fouling off a couple of pitches from Matt Stites before hitting his 15th homer off the foul pole in left. Alex Avila had three RBIs and Rajai Davis had three of Detroits 13 hits to improve the best road record in baseball to 30-17. "The hitters, they did their job," Sanchez said. "They give me enough runs to get the win." Sanchez followed up a strong start against Kansas City with a shaky one against Cleveland, allowing four runs in six innings his last start. The right-hander has been good on the road this season and was sharp early against the Diamondbacks with a big lead. That changed in the fifth inning, when Gerado Parra and Martin Prado hit consecutive doubles then Gregorius splashed a two-run homer into the pool in right-centre to cut Detroits lead to 7-3. Parra had a run-scoring single in the sixth inning and David Peralta added another in the seventh to cut Detroits lead to 7-5. Arizona had two on with no outs after that, but Sanchez got Aaron Hill to fly out and Chamberlain induced Paul Goldschmidt into an inning-ending double play on his lone pitch in the inning. Sanchez allowed five runs on 11 hits and struck out four in 6 1-3 innings. "His stuff is good, I just think when hes missed his spots, theyve hit it," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. Cahill had a decent outing after being called up from the minors his last start, allowing three runs on four hits in five innings of a no-decision against the Chicago Cubs. His second start didnt go so well. Avila hit a two-run single off Cahill in the second inning and the Tigers poured it on in the fourth, scoring five runs with the help of an error by Hill at second base. Avila had a sacrifice fly for the only earned run in the inning and Jackson had the big hit, a three-run double that got past left fielder Mark Trumbos diving attempt. Cahill allowed seven runs -- three earned -- on eight hits to remain winless in six starts this season. "Hitting is contagious and they got on a roll," Cahill said. Arizona managed to rally, but Cabrera put the game out of reach with one big swing. NOTES: Tigers RF Torii Hunter was given a day off despite swinging a hot bat. He has hit .381 with five homers, 12 runs and 20 RBIs over the past 16 games. OF J.D. Martinez tweaked his quadriceps against Arizona on Tuesday and was held out of the lineup. ... Gregorius homer was the 47th all-time to land in the Chase Field pool. ... The Diamondbacks have a day off before starting a three-game series at Philadelphia behind right-hander Wade Miley. Detroit starts a four-game series at the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday with right-hander Max Scherzer on the mound. Frank Gore Jersey . PARIS -- Milos Raonic hopes his recent success on clay leads to a long run at the French Open. The Canadian star won his opening match at the second Grand Slam of the year on Sunday, beating Australian wildcard Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 to reach the second round. Raonic, the eighth seed from Thornhill, Ont., needed exactly two hours to advance against one of the games rising young stars. He also beat an Australian opponent for the first time at a Grand Slam after losing to Carsten Ball at the 2010 U.S. Open and Lleyton Hewitt at the 2012 Australian Open. He won on his third match point, sealing victory with a 27th ace. Raonic, who came to Roland Garros from a Rome semifinal last weekend, finished with 50 winners and 30 unforced errors, breaking on four of ten chances. "I felt very good, I was able to do the things I wanted to do," said Raonic, who next plays one of two Czechs, Lukas Rosol of Jiri Vesely. "In the first round you go in not knowing exactly how things are going to play out. When it mattered, I was able to put forward the right attitude and the right level of tennis. Im happy with that." Raonic has a career record of 32-23 on clay courts, compared to 100-42 on hard surfaces that dont deaden his powerful serve. But Raonic had two quarter-final appearances as well as the Rome semifinal in four clay-court tournaments leading up to the French Open. Hes trying to go beyond the third round at Roland Garros for the first time in his career. Later Sunday, sixth seed Tomas Berdych beat Canadian qualifier Peter Polansky of Thornhill 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Polansky, ranked 137th and playing in only his sixth career singles main draw at a major, last played a Grand Slam at the 2010 US Open. He was successful on only one of six break points while committing 21 unforced errors with 15 winners.dddddddddddd "Its good to be back in the main draw of a slam," said Polansky. "I played well and enjoyed it. I was hoping to get a better draw, there are a lot of guys I could have beaten today. "I played well, I just came up a it short. But I take a lot of positives out of the last few weeks. Maybe I have more belief in my game now that Im older." Raonic said that despite heavy conditions in wet Paris, the courts held up well compared to Rome. "Theyre quite similar, though here they can change a little bit more due to the cloud coverage and not really that much sun the last few days," he said. "The ball wasnt bouncing as much as it had actually the last days on the outside courts. The 23-year-old Raonic used his experience against the young Australian, reducing Kyrgios to racket-hurling frustration after breaking immediately after losing serve in the second set. Raonic began the third set with a break for 2-0, lost it, but again gained the lead 4-2 on his way to victory. Raonic said that he was having trouble at times on serve, but managed to fight through the problem. "I was getting it together when it mattered, and thats all I can really ask," he said. "There was some moments where I was losing a little bit of concentration on my level, and I was able to put it together when I was in the important moments." After answering on-court questions in French, Raonic then said he would tweet a message in the language later. He said he would have the tweet proofed by an expert speaker before broadcasting it to his 143,000 followers. ' ' '
