TEMPE, Ariz. -- Four-guard starting lineups arent normal for Arizona State head coach Bobby Hurley. He never used such a unit while head coach at Buffalo for two seasons. But Sunday nights smaller lineup got the job done for the Sun Devils and their second-year head coach.Tra Holder scored 24 points, his second straight 20-point game, and Shannon Evans II added 20 points, 12 of those on 12 free throw attempts. The Sun Devils rode a hot second half to a 96-74 win over Cal Poly.Another guard, Torian Graham, scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half, and forward Obinna Oleka added 17 points to go with 13 rebounds. The Sun Devils (2-0) outscored the Mustangs 57-36 in the second 20 minutes after a tight first half.ASU made 18 of 30 (60 percent) second-half shots after struggling in the first half.As these guys (big men) develop, we can get more conventional, and we will play a more conventional lineup, Hurley said. But its nice when you have guys on the perimeter that are as good as they are because Ive got to get those guys on the floor.Kyle Toth made 5 of 8 from 3-point range and led Cal Poly with 21 points. Josh Martin added 17 points. The Mustangs (0-2) led by as many as five points early in the second half, 48-43 on a Jaylen Shead driving layup against three defenders with 16:26 to play. The Sun Devils then went on a 10-3 run to take the lead.I think we wore down a little bit mentally and emotional as it continued, Mustangs coach Joe Callero said. They were able to really drive, and to get to the free throw line 42 times, thats a credit to their aggressiveness.ASU led by as many as 24. Evans sank two free throws to make the score 74-62 with 6:41 to play, and the Sun Devils scored 12 unanswered points over four minutes toward the end of the game.We were trying to stay aggressive. I felt like I couldnt get my shot going for us, Evans said. I knew that getting to the line would get me going. At halftime we talked about picking the ball up, pressuring it and playing defense with energy.Cal Poly trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half before rallying to tie the score at 36 on Martins reverse layup with 3:02 left in the half. The Mustangs took a 38-36 lead on their next possession, as Martin threw down a dunk off Ridge Shipleys assist.ASU went the last 5:21 of the first half without a field goal and led 39-38 at halftime only because Holder made one of two free throws with 44 seconds to go before Cal Poly let the shot clock expire at the other end.Cal Poly shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, including 7 of 17 from 3-point range. ASU made five fewer shots, going 10 for 25 in the first 20 minutes to help keep the Mustangs in the game.STAT OF THE NIGHT: ASU got to the foul line 20 more times than Cal Poly. The Mustangs were 12 of 22 while the Sun Devils made 33 of 42, 27 of those makes from Evans, Holder and Oleka.HIGHLIGHT REEL: Back-to-back dunks on consecutive Sun Devil possessions by Graham ignited the crowd and the ASU comeback from a five-point deficit early in the second half.TURNING POINT: After Grahams jams, Holder dished to Kodi Justice for a 3 with 14:51 to play, giving ASU a 53-51 lead. The Sun Devils never trailed after that.BIG PICTURECal Poly: After losses to a pair of Division I programs, including Pepperdine on Friday, the Mustangs get a shot at their first win of the season with their next two games at home against lower-division teams. Hes here, said Lakers swingman Metta World Peace, who won an NBA championship alongside Bryant in 2010. Hes always going to be here. This is the Lakers organization and, yeah, the Mamba is still here.Perhaps Bryant is still with the team in spirit. Lakers forward Julius Randle said he recently worked out with Bryant and glowingly praised Bryants intelligence, detailed understanding and competitive edge. And World Peace said that he visited Bryants entrepreneurial office earlier this summer, and the two chatted about books that Bryant is working on.Im really excited about his books, added World Peace, who didnt clarify their literary genre. I cant wait to read his first book. For now, the Lakers first chapter beyond Bryant begins Tuesday in Santa Barbara, where the team will hold training camp without him for the first time since 1995. The emphasis now targets the Lakers promising but largely unproven young talent and first-year head coach Luke Walton, who at 36 is the NBAs youngest head coach.Another key change is expectations, especially for a rebuilding team that is coming off its worst season in franchise history -- 17-65 -- and has missed the playoffs for three straight seasons, a franchise-long postseason drought. While Bryant solely defined success by titles -- he won five -- and considered anything less to be a wasted season, the patience-preaching Lakers now will measure success far differently.Kobe has success on his mind at all times, World Peace said. Everybody cant be Kobe, obviously. But there is also the sense that the Lakers -- and particularly their young players -- are ready for a style of play that doesnt focus on Bryant. It was all about Kobe, said Lakers guard DAngelo Russell. Now, its a different headline. Its about the young guys and its about the new coaching staff. Theres so many more headlines that [the media] can talk about.Added Lakers forward Larry Nance Jr.: Were all equals. Were going into it as such. Theres nobody that we know guaranteed is going to be a perennial All-Star -- yet. Obviously, do we have plans and do we hope for certain guys to be? Yes. But were all gong into it, and thats why I kind of said everybody is really embracing the change and looking forward to getting going with it.Many of the Lakers most promising young players were on the team last year during Bryants circus-like farewell tour, when he received roaring chants, standing ovations and the bulk of the shots all season long.Last year, we played a liittle bit too much for ourselves, thinking about our stats or whatever it may be, Randle said.dddddddddddd That just doesnt work. Were playing for each other now. The energy, the vibe is different. You win 17 games, and everything is a press, a struggle. Its not fun. But its starting to become fun again. He deserved everything he got, Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson said of Bryant before adding that this season will be a fun year for all of us to be able to spread our wings and get out here and learn with each other and really grind.Still, Clarkson said they will carry forward the lessons that Bryant shared last season. The [biggest] thing that we couldve taken from him was the competitiveness that he had, Clarkson said. He got on us a couple times in the locker room [last season] about what it means to play for the Lakers and what it is as a young guy to really understand that to get wins and compete on the floor, knowing that we have an obligation to get wins and come and play. [He was] teaching us that there are no nights off. It was a great experience to have that last year, in terms of him [being] on us constantly.Randle grew up admiring Kobe and praised the work ethic that Bryant instilled throughout the organization. Hes gone and its our time now, Randle said, but weve got to do it together.Indeed, as Randle said, many Lakers pointed out that theres no defined leader or face of the organization with Bryant retired. It remains to be seen who exactly might fill that void.Thats a team thing, said Lakers rookie forward Brandon Ingram, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 draft. We never do it with one person. Its always a team thing. Everyone contributes in every way, even the guys on the bench. We know its going to be a team thing. As the teams point guard, Russell is a leading candidate to become the Lakers next star, if only because of the demands on his position. But as far as the face of the franchise, I feel like time will pan that out, Russell said. I dont feel like anybody is like, Oh, I want that. This is new to everybody. Weve got a lot of young guys, so this is all new.Walton, for one, is interested in who assumes leadership roles for the Lakers.Adversity brings that stuff out, Walton said. As a coaching staff, thats part of the joy in finding that stuff out and making changes along the way.Regardless, there is no doubt a different feel around this team -- one predicated not only on youth but on a culture of fun that Walton hopes to carry over from his two-year stint as an assistant with the Golden State Warriors. And, of course, theres no Kobe Bryant.Life moves on, Randle said. Just because Kobe is retired, the Lakers organization is not going to stop. Weve got to go on and got to get better. ' ' '
