CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- It was North Carolinas strangest blowout win in a long time.Mitch Trubisky passed for 184 yards and three touchdowns to help the Tar Heels beat The Citadel 41-7 on Saturday.T.J. Logan had a touchdown catch and a 100-yard kickoff return for a score for North Carolina (8-3), which forced a season-high four turnovers. We were worried about that football team, North Carolina coach Larry Fedora said. We knew they were a really good football team, that they would control the clock and that our guys were going to have to steal a few possessions. Defensively, we did that.North Carolina won even though its high-octane offense was quiet for much of the day. The Tar Heels converted just 1 of 8 third downs and were outgained by the Bulldogs 371-356.Perhaps most surprisingly, the Tar Heels intercepted a pass.Dominquie Green ended North Carolinas interception drought when he picked off a pass and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. The Tar Heels had been the only FBS team not to intercept a pass this season.Ryan Switzer added a 72-yard touchdown as North Carolina won for the 11th time in its last 12 home games. The Citadel (10-1) rushed for 344 yards, possessed the ball for more than 42 minutes and ran 33 more plays than North Carolina.Grant Drakeford had a 28-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs, whose school-record 10-game winning streak came to an end.We were nowhere near playing where we wanted today, Citadel coach Brent Thompson said. We needed a day like today to remind us that if you dont play well and you turn the ball over and you make a lot of mistakes, youre not going to win very many football games.THE TAKEAWAYThe Citadel: The Bulldogs stumbled in their stiffest test of the season to date. Lacking an effective passing attack, they were unable to rally after falling behind early. The Citadel must try to avoid similar circumstances in the postseason as opponents load up to try to stop its vaunted running game.North Carolina: Coming off a deflating loss and playing an undefeated opponent with an unconventional offense, the Tar Heels won a dangerous game without much difficulty. Their advantages in speed and overall talent were too much for The Citadel to overcome. We werent as sharp on offense, but we picked it up in other areas, Trubisky said.HE SAID ITFedora had grown tired of talking about his teams lack of interceptions, but he cracked a joke about the end of the streak.I was told that were the only team in the country that has returned all of their interceptions for touchdowns, he said. Thats a pretty big deal right there, I would think.HIGHLIGHT REELLogans 23-yard touchdown grab in the second quarter was impressive. He ran through the middle of the defense uncovered, and it appeared that Trubisky threw the ball too far in front of him. But Logan dived and speared the ball with his right hand before rolling over with control of it in the end zone. His kick return for a score to begin the second half was his school-record fourth kickoff return for a touchdown.UP NEXTThe Citadel: The Bulldogs will play in the FCS playoffs after earning the automatic berth from the Southern Conference.North Carolina: Still alive for the ACCs Coastal Division title, the Tar Heels host rival N.C. State on Friday. North Carolina needs to win and needs Virginia Tech to lose at home to Virginia in order to play in the conference championship game for the second year in a row. "Jeff is a hard worker who was an important special-teams contributor for us last season," said Stamps GM John Hufnagel. MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Jeff Gordon celebrated the last win of his NASCAR career as if it was his first trip to victory lane.He jumped and screamed and sprayed champagne as if he was a fresh-faced rookie last year at Martinsville Speedway. A scripted finish to an iconic career couldnt have written it better. That win last November at Martinsville put Gordon in the championship finale and ensured him one final shot at a fifth title. Although he came up empty three weeks later in the championship race, that one final victory was something to savor. So he had mixed feelings returning to the Virginia race track this weekend, because who wants to spoil such a memory? Gordon is driving his eighth and final scheduled race at the replacement driver for Dale Earnhardt Jr., who is sidelined with a concussion. There is a part of me that wasnt sure if I wanted to come back and take away from that, but at the same time, Ive always said if there was one track where I felt like I could get back in the car and feel comfortable and competitive, its this track, Gordon said Friday. For that, Im happy that Im here.Earnhardts injury pulled Gordon out of retirement in July and put the four-time champion into the No. 88 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports. Hes had average results, with only one top-10 and seven laps led in his seven races. But Martinsville is a special track for Gordon, and when he gets behind the wheel at the paperclip, people expect magical things. His victory last year was his ninth at Martinsville -- 93rd of his career -- and he repeatedly said NASCARs shortest track was the one on the circuit that could get him back into a race car.He ultimately ruled it out, and said a one-off was just too difficult to do correctly, even with Hendrick Motorsports fielding the car. Theres no point, Gordon thought, in going to a race if you dont expect to win.Everything changed, though, when Rick Hendrick called him during a vacation in France and asked him to sub for Earnhardt. Gordon has split the seat with Alex Bowman, who will race the last three events of the year in the No. 88.So is Sundays race at Martinsville the official last race of his career?Your guess is as good as mine, Gordon said.dddddddddddd I can promise you I had no intentions of this happening, but here I am. Never say never, is all I know what to say.I really dont think that I will be getting back in the Cup car again, but go ask Rick Hendrick. That really has more to do with him than anything else.Jimmie Johnson, the driver who landed his Cup ride at Hendrick with Gordons assistance, isnt quite sure that ol four-time will never be back on a race car. Gordon is an analyst for the first half of the season with Fox Sports, but has the second half of the NASCAR schedule virtually wide open.He is one heck of a sub to have sitting on the bench when you need it, Johnson said. We will see. Im not sure he is ready to completely stop. I think he was ready to get off the merry-go-round of (38) races a year, but the full stop, I dont think he is ready for.Gordons success at Martinsville is a bonus to Hendrick Motorsports because hes another resource this weekend for Johnson to lean on in Johnsons quest for his seventh championship. Although Johnson is an eight-time winner at Martinsville, hes not been to the third round of the playoffs since the elimination format was introduced in 2014.Johnson is trying to make the championship race for the first time in this format, and a win Sunday would get him an automatic berth.Jeff has always been a resource, but here this weekend is even more of a resource for me than really any other time Ive raced against him, Johnson said. I look at really pulling off of Jeff this weekend and using him to make my car better, to work on my techniques in the racecar, and hopefully get the best performance out of myself this weekend. And that, Gordon said, will be reward for racing at Martinsville.Obviously we want him to win the championship, Gordon said. We will do everything we can to work with him and also with our other teammates to try to come out of here with really good finishes and then Im super focused on myself on what I can do. I would love to get these guys a great finish if this is my last race. ' ' '
