ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Six years ago, New Mexicos football team was at one of the lowest points in its history with a dismal 1-11 record.UTSA was just about to start its football program. On Dec. 17, the two schools with rising programs will kick off the college postseason in the New Mexico Bowl following painful years of losing and long efforts to build competitive teams. At a New Mexico Bowl news conference, first-year UTSA head coach Frank Wilson said its an honor to lead the Roadrunners in the schools first ever bowl appearance. This is history for our program, Wilson said. No matter what happens, this will always be the first time for us.UTSA (6-6) won five of its last eight games to become bowl eligible for the first time in the programs six-year history. When Wilson took over the Roadrunners, he didnt make promises on when UTSA would make it to a bowl. I said wed make it whenever were good enough, Wilson said. And now that UTSA is in a bowl, Wilson said watch out for the teams exciting offense and speed. We vary game to game based on what we need to do to win the football game, he said.Meanwhile, the Lobos (8-4) shared the Mountain Wests Mountain Division title and are in a bowl for the second year in a row following years of losing records.New Mexico head coach Bob Davie said he was happy to play in back-to-back New Mexico Bowls. You know, you have to take advantage of the momentum, said Davie, the former Notre Dame coach who took over the struggling New Mexico program in 2012.He said New Mexico and UTSA have traveled similar paths in recent years to get to this point.UTSA athletic director Lynn Hickey said it was fitting for her school to play Davie and New Mexico in its first ever bowl. Thats because when Hickey was building the football program, she sought Davies advice while he was a college football analyst for ESPN and ABC.Did UTSA ever offer Davie the head coaching job before he came to New Mexico?I think that was probably something thats in the past and theres no reason to get that specific, Davie said. Its been a long journey. I have tremendous respect for them.---Follow Russell Contreras on Twitter at http://twitter.com/russcontreras . Amid a back-and-forth between Riot Games co-founder and League of Legends co-creator Marc Tryndamere Merrill and Team SoloMid owner Andy Reginald Dinh, Merrill has issued a new response to the situation, saying that his initial response on Reddit two days ago was ill-warranted and failed to acknowledge many of the issues discussed by Dinh in a recent interview with theScore.Merrill recognizes that his initial response, which has received criticism from other team owners, industry leaders, journalists and the League of Legends community, read as a passive-aggressive response to Dinhs concerns. Merrill says he agrees with many of Dinhs recent criticisms, both in the interview with theScore and a follow up response by Dinh on Twitlonger.League esports (in its current form) doesnt provide the long-term security and sustainability that we ultimately aspire to for teams and pros, Merrill said in his response. Team costs are rising faster (and in some cases are higher) than team revenues, and while this may be the short-term reality of growing a young sport (particularly as thhe value of teams grow), its not what we believe the long-term state of League esports will be.ddddddddddddThis response backtracks from his original statement, in which he criticized Dinh for spending money on other esports outside League of Legends. In his first response, Merrill said, Maybe [Dinh] should spend some of the millions he has made / makes from League of Legends on paying them instead of investing in other esports where he is losing money. In his new response, Merrill reveals some new information about Riot Games business plans, including team-specific items such as revenue sharing for the teams and their professional players. This is a model that Dinh said works well in first-person shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, where teams logos and players signatures are sold as stickers to place on guns. That revenue is divided between Counter-Strikes developer, Valve, and the teams, which ultimately trickles down to the players. ' ' '
