US Open champion Stan Wawrinka meets Kei Nishikori in the opening game of the John McEnroe group on Monday at the World Tour Finals. After the Ivan Lendl group got underway on Sunday, it is the turn of the second group on Monday and with Andy Murray taking on Marin Cilic in the evening session, Wawrinka and Nishikori will look to start with a win in the first match of the day. John McEnroe Group Andy Murray (Great Britain) Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland) Kei Nishikori (Japan) Marin Cilic (Croatia) Wawrinka will start as favourite despite a run of indifferent form since he claimed the third Grand Slam of his career, beating Novak Djokovic to claim the US Open title in September. In fact it is that form which is likely to make world No 3 Wawrinka a dangerous competitor and the main rival to Djokovic and Andy Murray, whose consistency makes them the lead contenders for the title in London. Stan the danger man We profile the three-time Grand Slam champion and the ability to raise his game Wawrinka is rarely in top form when he has delivered his major success and his ability to motivate himself for the big tournaments is well known and underlined by three successive World Tour Finals semi-finals.He is also up to his career high in the world rankings and claimed four ATP titles this year, only Djokovic (seven) and Murray (eight) won more. The Swiss ace has the edge in matches with his Japanese opponent, winning four of their six encounters including a four-set semi-final victory at Flushing Meadow but Nishikori does not have to far to look for a win having beaten Wawrinka in the semi-final in Canada prior to the US Open. A look back at Kei Nishikoris highlights of 2016 which helped him reach the World Tour Finals for the third year running Nishikoris year has been another case of what might have been having reached five finals but only claiming one title, in Memphis. However, its been a year of huge consistency as he has made two Masters Series finals (losing to Novak Djokovic in Miami and Canada) as well as reaching two Grand Slam quarter-finals.Nishikori beat Murray at the US Open and he will be looking to emulate his debut in the World Tour Finals where he reached the last four in 2014.
