CARSON, Calif. - Not even Major League Soccers worst defensive team could provide the tonic for Toronto FCs recent offensive woes. Chivas USA, playing with 10 men for the final 65 minutes, used Erick Torres goal in the 79th minute to secure a 1-0 victory Wednesday night at the StubHub Center and break a 14-match winless streak. "Its badly disappointing," Toronto defender Steven Caldwell said. "You should never lose by a goal against 10 men. In 65 minutes, we certainly should break down a team that plants back and waits." Toronto FC (2-10-7), winless in its past five, has not scored in four of those games and has been held without a goal eight times this season. "Were getting chances," forward Justin Braun said. "Were getting the ball in the box. Were just not connecting. That final pass is too far in front or too far behind the guy." Toronto demonstrated that tendency in the 29th minute, when Jeremy Brockie placed a right-wing cross barely ahead of Robert Earnshaws run toward goal. Four minutes later, Brockie had a chance to score after receiving Jonathan Osorios pass from the left side of the penalty area and beating defender Carlos Bocanegra. But Brockie directed a 3-yard shot just wide of the right post. "That one in the first half was a golden chance," Toronto coach Ryan Nelsen said of Brockies shot. "I feel if we had gotten one goal, it would have been two or three." Nelsen said his team controlled the game until Chivas USAs Eric Avila received a red card in the 25th minute for a hard tackle on Torontos Darel Russell. "When it was 11-v-11, we were by far the stronger team," Nelsen said. "Everything was going according to plan. When Chivas lost the man, they got numbers behind the ball. It made it very hard hard for us. "If it was 11-v-11 and the game continued in the fashion it was going in the first 15, 20 minutes, it would have been a lot easier. They would have committed more guys forward and we would have had space to attack." Torres, a 20-year old on loan from Mexicos CD Guadalajara, finished a counterattack with a 23-yard shot that deflected off Caldwells leg into the net. It was his first goal and his first game for Chivas USA. "Youre always vulnerable on a mistake or a random counterattack," Nelsen said. "We got caught with a sucker punch." ARLINGTON, Texas -- The presidential showdown isnt the only contentious race on the minds of Arlington voters, who also must decide whether to approve public funding for a $1 billion retractable-roof stadium for the Texas Rangers.Figuring that the larger turnout for the presidential election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump would benefit a new stadium, city officials rushed to get the initiative on Tuesdays ballot, and observers say it could be close, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported (http://bit.ly/2ewqHYB ).The new stadium would replace Globe Life Park, which opened in 1994. To pay for as much as half of the new stadium, voters are being asked to extend Arlingtons half-cent sales tax, 2 percent hotel-occupancy tax and 5 percent car-rental tax. Arlington currently uses those revenues to pay down the remaining $155 million debt it owes for its share of the construction cost of the Dallas Cowboys AT&T Stadium, which opened in 2009.The vote also would allow for a maximum 10 percent admission tax and $3 parking tax for the Rangers use, which opponents have criticized because the city legally could have used those taxes for its share. It approved the same deal for the Cowboys.Vote Yes! Keep the Rangers, a political action committee that includes the mayor as chairman and all city council and school board members, has said the Rangers should get to use that revenue since they will take responsibility for maintenance and operation of the stadium.Sarah Patterson voted against the new stadium during early voting because she didnt see a point in spending money that doesnt need to be spent. And Juddie Rice echoed the concerns of city officials, who struck a deal with the Rangers in May to keep them in Arlington through the 2053 season.dddddddddddd If the stadium proposition fails, she said, I just think it opens it up for Dallas or Frisco to talk to them. I want to keep them. The Rangers havent publicly threatened to leave, although a team representative held preliminary talks with Dallas officials about a covered stadium.Vote Yes! campaign manager Brian Mayes told The Associated Press on Monday that a lot of supporters have turned out to vote and the group will campaign until polls close Tuesday. He said he believes the opposition has been turning people off by being aggressive and negative. Nobody wants to be accosted at a polling location. Our people stayed positive, he said.Peggy Rudd and her husband, Bill Gaut, had distributed fliers denouncing the new stadium to thousands of Arlington homes. And during early voting, they had more fliers critical of the stadium, including a rip on the roof: The Rangers have played ball here 44 years. Suddenly now, its too hot.Rudd told the newspaper that she was seeing a correlation between a voters stadium choice and presidential pick. Were finding that when they vote for Trump they vote against the stadium, Rudd said. I guess they dont like seeing government joining forces with rich dudes.Despite the politically charged environment, University of Texas at Arlington political science professor Allan Saxe predicts the new stadium will become a reality.
